Wincanton has made a multi-million-pound investment in 48 autonomous mobile robots to accelerate its e-commerce capabilities. It said the new AMR fleet would provide it with greater flexibility in its operations, enabling it to better manage the fluctuating product volumes associated with e-fulfilment work. Getlink – formerly Groupe Eurotunnel – said its unaccompanied freight service through the Channel Tunnel had seen a marked acceleration in growth since March, with more than 1,000 trailers carried. The transport of trailers by the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Freight teams on the two chunnel terminals operates 24/7 and generates 40 times less CO2 than ferries, according to the company. Evri will open a new depot in Plymouth next month, creating over 50 jobs in the area. It said the development was part of its commitment to investing in infrastructure to support the growth in online shopping. The new site is on the Parkway industrial estate and taking up 60,000 sq ft, it is almost double the size of the existing depot at the nearby Bell Close, which has been managed by a third-party contractor.
