HGV delivery drivers slammed after new data reveals ‘dangerous’ level of speeding offences

More than 23,000 HGV drivers were caught speeding on motorways in 2021, with the annual figures moving in “a dangerous and negative direction”.

Analysis of data involving delivery drivers in light and heavy goods vehicles found there were 23,136 truck drivers charged for the offence on motorways in 2021, an increase from 17,439 in 2020 and 20,816 in 2019.

For LCVs it was 84,764 in 2021, 59,678 the year before and 67,236 in 2019.

Broker Insurance Revolution said it had also reviewed government figures for vehicles on roads with 30mph and 20mph speed limits and discovered the same trends.

In addition, HGVs were found to be responsible for two deaths and 29 injuries on all roads in 2019 and one death and 21 injuries in 2020.

Insurance Revolution said official fatality figures for 2021 were not yet available, but it added: “The analysis of deaths and injuries caused by speeding further highlights the danger of driving at irresponsible speeds.

“With the 2021 data yet to be released, we’d anticipate fatalities to unfortunately rise alongside the number of drivers caught speeding.

“Delivery drivers are not only putting lives at risk but their livelihoods too, as a result, safe and responsible driving should be a priority.”
